📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Background: Football is the most popular sport in Nigeria and requires high aerobic and anaerobic physiological capacity. Systematic exercise testing of footballers in less-studied regions such as Adamawa State can reveal fitness deficiencies and inform coach-led conditioning strategies. Recent sports physiology literature emphasises the importance of position-specific fitness profiling. Objectives: This study aims to measure peak oxygen uptake, maximal heart rate, and recovery heart rate responses during a standardised treadmill maximal exercise test among male amateur footballers in Adamawa State. Methods: Sixty male footballers from three registered amateur clubs will be recruited. Participants will undergo the Bruce treadmill protocol. Heart rate will be continuously monitored using a Polar chest strap. Blood pressure will be taken at rest and immediately post-exercise. Descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA will compare responses across playing positions. Expected Outcomes: Midfielders are expected to demonstrate superior aerobic capacity compared to goalkeepers and defenders, consistent with position-specific metabolic demands documented in recent literature. Conclusion: Results will guide position-specific fitness training for grassroots football development in North East Nigeria. Keywords: maximal exercise testing, footballers, aerobic capacity, peak oxygen uptake, Adamawa.
