📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study investigates the complex relationships among political connections, state ownership, and financial reporting incentives in companies listed on the Nigerian Exchange Group, contributing to the global literature on the political economy of accounting. Politically connected firms, defined as companies whose directors or large shareholders have close ties to government, may face different reporting incentives than arm's length market participants, potentially using financial disclosures strategically to manage regulatory relationships, access preferential financing, or signal political legitimacy. In Nigeria's politically charged business environment, these dynamics are particularly pronounced. This study uses panel data from 65 listed firms for the period 2012 to 2023, constructing a novel political connection index based on directorship biographical data, government contract award history, and regulatory sanction records. State ownership is measured using direct government shareholding and sovereign wealth fund equity interests. Financial reporting incentives are operationalized through earnings quality indicators, disclosure voluntarism, and audit choice. A simultaneous equations framework with instrumental variables is employed to address endogeneity of political connections. Results reveal that politically connected firms demonstrate systematically lower earnings quality and higher income-increasing accruals, consistent with rent-seeking reporting behavior. State ownership shows a non-linear effect, with moderate state ownership associated with better earnings quality than either full private or majority state ownership. The study contributes an original political economy of accounting framework for Nigerian listed companies and recommends enhanced independence requirements for boards of state-influenced entities.
