Preservation and Conservation Practices in Ibadan Municipal Libraries

This study examined preservation and conservation practices in selected municipal libraries in Ibadan, Oyo State, South West Nigeria. Library collections across Nigeria face increasing threats from humidity, biological infestation, and physical deterioration, making preservation a critical concern for information managers. The study adopted a descriptive survey design, and data were collected from librarians and library assistants in five municipal library branches using questionnaires and direct observation. Findings indicated that most branches lacked written preservation policies and that existing practices were largely reactive rather than preventive. Shelving materials were found to be overcrowded, many items showed evidence of mould damage, and fumigation was conducted infrequently. Staff also reported insufficient training in handling fragile or deteriorating materials. The study recommended the development of formal preservation policies, the training of personnel in basic conservation techniques, and the allocation of dedicated budgets for preservation activities. Municipal libraries, as custodians of community information heritage, must prioritise the protection of their collections to ensure continued public access.
