📖 VIEW PROJECT ABSTRACT
This study investigates the press freedom challenges facing journalists in Rivers State, South South Nigeria, documenting the types, frequency, and contexts of threats to journalistic practice. Press freedom is essential for the functioning of democratic accountability and informed citizenry, yet Nigerian journalists across many states face multiple forms of intimidation, censorship, and violence. Rivers State's politically volatile environment and oil industry interests create specific pressures on journalists that have not been adequately documented. This study uses a qualitative methodology, combining in-depth interviews with 25 active journalists at newspapers, television stations, and online portals in Port Harcourt, Obio-Akpor, and Okrika local government areas, with document analysis of NUJ Rivers State Council complaint records from 2020 to 2023. A standardised threat typology (legal harassment, physical attacks, economic pressure, digital surveillance, and self-censorship) is applied. Findings reveal that self-censorship is the most pervasive press freedom concern, reported by 88 percent of journalists when covering oil spill accountability, political corruption, and militant activity stories. Physical attacks are documented in 14 cases over the study period. Legal harassment through spurious defamation suits is used by political figures against at least eight journalists. Economic pressure through government advertising withdrawal is used against critical media organisations. Female journalists report additional harassment related to their gender. The study concludes that a multi-layered press freedom deficit exists in Rivers State. It recommends legal aid for defamation cases, journalist safety protocols, and government advertising allocation transparency reforms.
