Prevalence and Contributing Factors of Teenage Pregnancy in a Rural Community in Nasarawa State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Background: Teenage pregnancy continues to represent a significant reproductive health challenge in rural Nigeria, carrying educational, health, and social consequences for adolescent girls. This study determines the prevalence and contributing factors of teenage pregnancy in a rural community in Nasarawa State, North Central geopolitical zone. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study enrolled 220 female adolescents aged 13 to 19 years using systematic random sampling. A structured interviewer-administered questionnaire assessed sociodemographic characteristics, sexual behaviour, and access to reproductive health information. Results: Prevalence of teenage pregnancy was high. Early marriage, peer pressure, and limited access to reproductive health services were the dominant contributing factors. School dropout was strongly associated with higher pregnancy rates. Knowledge of contraception was low among currently pregnant respondents. Conclusion: High teenage pregnancy prevalence in rural Nasarawa State demands an integrated response combining comprehensive sexuality education, accessible youth-friendly reproductive health services, and community mobilisation targeting parents and traditional leaders. Family medicine practitioners should spearhead adolescent health programmes in collaboration with schools and community health workers. Keywords: teenage pregnancy, adolescents, rural community, Nasarawa State, reproductive health
