Intestinal helminthiasis in slaughter animals represents a significant source of carcass condemnation and potential zoonotic exposure for abattoir workers. This study determined the prevalence of intestinal helminths in cattle, sheep, and goats slaughtered at the Makurdi Township Abattoir in Benue State, North Central Nigeria. A systematic sampling approach was used to examine the intestinal tracts of 150 animals comprising 60 cattle, 50 sheep, and 40 goats over a four-month period. Worms were recovered, preserved, and identified morphologically. A questionnaire survey was concurrently administered to 40 abattoir workers to assess their awareness of helminthic zoonoses and use of personal protective equipment. An overall helminth prevalence of 64.7% was recorded, with Haemonchus contortus, Cooperia species, and Strongyloides species being the most frequently identified. Zoonotic species including Echinococcus granulosus were identified in 8.7% of cattle examined. Only 12.5% of abattoir workers consistently used gloves during organ handling. The study highlights the public health risk associated with helminthic infections in slaughter animals and the inadequate protective behavior among exposed workers. Deworming programs for livestock, worker education, and provision of personal protective equipment at abattoirs are recommended as immediate interventions.
