Professional Analysis of Petrochemical By-Products Valorisation Opportunities in the Warri Refinery and Petrochemical Company

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

The valorisation of petrochemical by-products and waste streams represents an important strategy for improving the economic efficiency and environmental performance of refinery operations. This study professionally analyses by-product generation patterns, current disposal and utilisation practices, and valorisation opportunities at the Warri Refinery and Petrochemical Company, Delta State, South South Nigeria. Primary data were collected through structured interviews with process and environmental engineers, supplemented by review of publicly available operational records and technical reports. By-products analysed include fuel gas, sulphur, petroleum coke, slop oils, spent catalysts, and sour water. Current valorisation rates and monetisation pathways were documented and benchmarked against practice at comparable African and Asian refineries. Analysis reveals that fuel gas valorisation through the refinery fuel system is well established, but spent catalyst recycling, sulphur recovery, and sour water treatment remain underutilised. Petroleum coke generated in significant tonnage is currently stockpiled without a defined commercial offtake arrangement. Slop oil recovery infrastructure is underinvested, resulting in an estimated annual loss of several thousand tonnes of recoverable hydrocarbons. The study identifies four priority valorisation opportunities with economic and environmental co-benefits and presents an implementation roadmap with estimated investment requirements. Engagement with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company and downstream industrial users is recommended to establish offtake agreements for key by-products.
