Professional Assessment of Border Security Management Challenges on Nigeria’s Northern Borders

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Nigeria's northern land borders with Niger, Chad, and Cameroon represent critical security frontiers through which weapons, trafficked persons, illegal migrants, and insurgent fighters transit, and professional assessment of border security management gaps is essential for operational improvement. This study professionally assessed border security management challenges on Nigeria's northern border corridors, focusing on Sokoto-Niger, Borno-Chad/Cameroon, and Kebbi-Niger border segments. A professional security audit methodology was employed, drawing on structured interviews with 20 Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, DSS, and military border security personnel across eight border posts, documentary analysis of government border management improvement plans, and benchmarking against ECOWAS border management protocols. Results showed that staff-to-border-crossing-point ratios were below ECOWAS minimum standards in 87.5 percent of assessed points. Biometric screening equipment was functional in only 37.5 percent of assessed border posts. Night surveillance capacity was absent at all assessed informal crossing points. Interagency communication protocols between Customs, Immigration, and security forces were informal and inconsistent. Intelligence sharing with Nigerian sister agencies and counterpart border forces in Niger and Cameroon was rated as inadequate by 90 percent of interviewed personnel. The study recommends integrated border management reform, joint interagency operation centres at three major northern crossings, biometric technology deployment, and bilateral border security cooperation frameworks with Niger and Cameroon.
