Professional Assessment of Maintenance Management Practices for Mechatronic Equipment in the Oil and Gas Industry in Bayelsa State

Effective maintenance of mechatronic and electromechanical equipment in oil and gas production facilities in Bayelsa State, South South Nigeria, is critical for ensuring production continuity, regulatory compliance, and worker safety. This study conducts a professional assessment of existing maintenance management practices at five upstream oil production facilities in the Western Niger Delta, examining the adequacy of maintenance planning, spare parts management, condition monitoring programmes, and workforce competency. A mixed-methods approach combining structured facility audits, interviews with 48 maintenance engineers and technicians, and document review of maintenance management systems was employed. Findings reveal that 60 percent of assessed facilities rely predominantly on reactive maintenance strategies, with condition-based and predictive maintenance representing less than 15 percent of total maintenance activities. Spare parts stockout rates average 28 percent for critical components, contributing to extended equipment downtime. Only 37 percent of maintenance technicians had received formal training on mechatronic system diagnostics within the preceding three years. The study benchmarks observed practices against the ISO 55001 asset management standard and the Society for Maintenance and Reliability Professionals framework. Recommendations include the adoption of computerized maintenance management systems, formalization of condition monitoring programmes for rotating equipment, and structured technical competency development pathways. The findings are intended to support maintenance managers in Nigerian oil sector facilities in systematically improving equipment reliability and reducing unplanned downtime costs.
