Professional Assessment of Smart Hospital Technology Integration Readiness at a New Hospital Development Project in Abuja FCT

The increasing development of new hospital facilities in Abuja FCT provides an opportunity to integrate smart hospital technologies from the design stage rather than retrofitting legacy buildings, but professional assessment of integration readiness and planning quality at these projects is rarely conducted. This study professionally assesses the smart hospital technology integration readiness for a newly commissioned five-hundred-bed hospital development project in Abuja FCT, evaluating the technology planning quality, infrastructure design, and organizational readiness for a defined set of smart hospital capabilities. Smart hospital technology domains assessed include clinical IoT and connected medical devices, electronic health record and clinical decision support systems, real-time patient flow and bed management systems, automated pharmacy and medication management, smart building management for energy and environment, and telehealth and remote monitoring infrastructure. Assessment methodology combined architectural and engineering drawing review, structured interviews with project architects, IT consultants, biomedical engineers, and clinical leadership, and a gap analysis against a smart hospital readiness framework derived from international best practice literature. Technical infrastructure planning was rated as adequate for basic networking and EHR implementation but showed significant gaps in IoT device management architecture, cybersecurity planning, and interoperability standards specification. Organizational readiness was limited by the absence of clinical informatics or digital health leadership in the project governance structure. The study delivers a detailed readiness report with prioritized recommendations for technology integration gap closure before operational commissioning.
