Professional Assessment of the State of Indigenous Language Theatre Production in Nigeria

Theatre productions in Nigerian indigenous languages remain a vital but underdocumented sector of the performing arts ecosystem, serving linguistic communities, reinforcing oral literary traditions, and providing culturally specific entertainment, yet their production conditions, distribution, and institutional support are poorly understood. This study professionally assessed the state of indigenous language theatre production in Nigeria, focusing on Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, and Efik language theatre across six geopolitical zones. A professional survey and assessment methodology was employed, drawing on structured interviews with 24 indigenous language theatre practitioners, 8 arts administrators, and 6 policy officers from state arts councils, alongside attendance at four indigenous language theatre performances and documentary analysis of available production records. The assessment revealed a vibrant but commercially fragile sector heavily concentrated in Yoruba travelling theatre (the alawada tradition), with Igbo, Hausa, and Efik language theatre significantly smaller in scale and visibility. Television and video production has largely displaced live theatre as the distribution platform for indigenous language dramatic content. State arts council support was reported as adequate by only 29.2 percent of practitioners. Cross-subsidisation through corporate entertainment was identified as the primary survival strategy for 54.2 percent of practitioners. The study concludes that indigenous language theatre is commercially sustainable in the Yoruba context but fragile in others and recommends a national indigenous theatre development fund, script commissioning programmes in underrepresented languages, and distribution partnerships with state television broadcasters.
