Professional Development in Classical Archaeology for Nigerian Museum and Heritage Professionals

Classical archaeology, encompassing the material culture and built environment of the Greco-Roman world and its connections with Africa, provides methodological and interpretive frameworks that Nigerian heritage professionals can apply to the documentation and conservation of Nigeria's own ancient material culture. This study designs and evaluates a professional development programme in classical archaeology for Nigerian museum and heritage professionals. A professional programme design methodology was adopted, beginning with needs assessment consultations with 30 heritage professionals from the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, state museums, and university archaeological units across the South West, North Central, and South South zones. Review of international archaeological professional training standards, including those of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists and the Society for American Archaeology, informed programme design. The programme addresses five competency areas: stratigraphic excavation methodology, artefact classification and dating, archaeometric analysis, site conservation and management, and interpretive writing for public engagement. Connections between classical Mediterranean and Nigerian pre-colonial archaeological contexts are integrated throughout. Pilot delivery at the National Museum Jos reached 25 professionals, with post-programme competency assessments showing an average improvement of 40 percent across the five areas. The study recommends adoption of the programme by the National Commission for Museums and Monuments as an annual professional development certification.
