Professional Ethics and Ministerial Integrity in Nigerian Pentecostal Churches: A Training Framework

The rapid expansion of Pentecostal churches in Nigeria has brought with it growing concerns about financial impropriety, pastoral misconduct, and accountability gaps among church leaders. This study develops a professional ethics and ministerial integrity training framework for Nigerian Pentecostal church leadership, drawing on theological, sociological, and professional development perspectives. A professional assessment design was adopted, combining documentary analysis of published ministerial codes of conduct from ten Nigerian Pentecostal denominations with structured interviews conducted with 30 senior pastors and denominational leaders across Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano. Case review of publicly reported pastoral misconduct incidents from 2018 to 2023 was also conducted. Findings reveal that fewer than 40 percent of sampled denominations have documented ministerial ethics codes. Accountability mechanisms for senior pastors are largely informal and interpersonal, creating structural vulnerability to abuse. Financial transparency in church administration is most deficient in founder-led single-congregation settings. The proposed training framework encompasses six modules: theological foundations of ministerial integrity, financial stewardship and accountability, sexual ethics in ministry, pastoral authority and congregational empowerment, conflict of interest management, and whistleblowing and accountability culture. Expert review by twelve denominational leaders confirmed the framework's practical relevance and theological appropriateness. The study recommends that the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria adopt this framework as a mandatory ministerial formation standard for ordination and ongoing professional development of pastors across all member denominations.
