Professional Evaluation of Ultrasound Training Programme Quality for Radiographers at Nigerian Federal Medical Centres

Ultrasound training for radiographers in Nigeria is delivered through in-service programmes, postgraduate diploma courses, and manufacturer-sponsored training events of varying quality and depth, and the competency outcomes of these training pathways determine the diagnostic quality of ultrasound services provided across federal medical centres. A professional evaluation of ultrasound training programme quality for radiographers at Nigerian federal medical centres is needed to identify training effectiveness and standardisation priorities. This study professionally evaluates ultrasound training programme quality and competency outcomes for radiographers across ten federal medical centres spanning five geopolitical zones. A professional education evaluation design is applied, combining curriculum document analysis for training programmes attended by 120 radiographers with structured competency assessments using an Objective Structured Clinical Examination format covering abdominal ultrasound, obstetric ultrasound, and musculoskeletal ultrasound domains. Training quality dimensions assessed include curriculum comprehensiveness, supervised scanning hours, image interpretation training, and examiner competency assessment. Descriptive statistics and regression identifying predictors of competency scores are computed in SPSS. Available ultrasound training literature from Nigerian FMC contexts identifies wide variability in training duration and supervised practice hours as the primary sources of competency outcome inconsistency. The Society of Radiographers Ultrasound Competency Framework and the BMUS education and training standards provide the professional reference. Findings are expected to reveal significant competency variation attributable to training programme quality differences. Recommendations address a minimum national standard for radiographer ultrasound training programmes, NRBN oversight of training provider accreditation, and structured mentored practice requirements for all ultrasound training pathways.
