Professional Livestock Record Keeping and Farm Management Information Systems in Commercial Operations in Nigeria

This study examines livestock record keeping practices and the adoption of farm management information systems in commercial livestock operations in Nigeria, assessing the quality of existing records and the benefits of improved information management. Effective livestock record keeping is a prerequisite for informed management decisions, genetic improvement programmes, disease tracing, and financial performance analysis. In Nigeria's growing commercial livestock sector, record keeping practices vary widely from informal notebooks to computerised herd management software. This study surveys record keeping systems in 50 commercial livestock farms of varying species and scales in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Port Harcourt. System types, completeness of records maintained, data utilisation practices, and management decision quality are assessed. Economic value of improved record keeping is estimated through case study analysis of farms with comprehensive versus minimal records. Findings reveal that only 28 percent of sampled farms maintain comprehensive individual animal records suitable for genetic selection. Financial records are maintained by 72 percent of farms but are often insufficiently detailed for enterprise profitability analysis. Farms using computerised herd management software show 18 percent higher overall performance scores on a standardised management quality assessment. Barriers to improved record keeping include time constraints, limited staff literacy, and inadequate training. The study recommends a standardised Nigerian commercial livestock record keeping framework and training programme, with mobile application development to reduce recording time burden on farm staff.
