Professional Mediators and Workplace Conflict Resolution in Lagos State Financial Institutions

This study examines the deployment and effectiveness of professional mediators in resolving workplace conflicts within financial institutions in Lagos State, South West Nigeria. The banking and financial services sector is characterised by high-pressure environments, competitive hierarchies, and diverse employee populations, conditions that generate frequent interpersonal and organisational disputes. Drawing on a professional practice research framework, data were collected through structured interviews with 40 human resource managers and 20 certified workplace mediators across commercial banks and microfinance institutions in Lagos Island and Victoria Island. Secondary data were drawn from Central Bank of Nigeria workforce management guidelines and published human resource management literature from 2020 to 2024. The theoretical framework is anchored in interest-based relational approach theory and organisational conflict management theory. Findings indicate that financial institutions that employ in-house trained mediators report lower absenteeism, reduced labour tribunal referrals, and faster resolution of employee grievances compared to those relying solely on hierarchical disciplinary processes. However, cultural resistance to mediation as a sign of personal weakness and inadequate budget allocation to alternative dispute resolution infrastructure limit uptake. Recommendations include establishing mandatory professional mediator certification standards for human resource professionals in Nigerian financial institutions, integrating conflict resolution capabilities into management training programmes, and providing regulatory incentives for financial institutions that demonstrate structured workplace mediation systems.
