Professional Standards for Christian Counsellors in Nigerian Faith-Based Organisations

Christian counselling in Nigerian faith-based organisations operates in an accountability vacuum, with no nationally recognised professional standards, licensing requirements, or ethical frameworks governing practice. This study develops professional standards for Christian counsellors working in Nigerian faith-based organisations, drawing on international counselling ethics frameworks, theological perspectives, and Nigerian regulatory contexts. A professional standards development design was adopted, combining a survey of 60 practising Christian counsellors from faith-based organisations in Lagos, Abuja, and Enugu with interviews with twelve clinical psychologists, eight theological educators, and six representatives of Nigerian counselling associations. Review of international Christian counsellor standards from the American Association of Christian Counselors and Christian Medical Fellowship was conducted for comparative benchmarking. Findings reveal that 68 percent of Nigerian faith-based Christian counsellors have no formal counselling qualifications, relying solely on pastoral training and personal experience. Dual relationship (counsellor-congregation member) management is the most frequently reported ethical challenge. Referral pathways to professional mental health services are inadequately utilised. The proposed professional standards framework includes eight domains: training and competency requirements, ethical boundaries, confidentiality, informed consent, clinical supervision, professional development, referral obligations, and documentation standards. Expert validation confirmed the framework's relevance for the Nigerian context. Recommendations include establishment of a Nigerian Christian Counsellors Association and creation of a national certification pathway for Christian counsellors.
