Prophetic Preaching and Political Accountability in Nigeria: A Theological Assessment of Church Voices During the 2023 General Elections

This study provides a theological assessment of the prophetic preaching responses of Nigerian church leaders to the 2023 general elections, evaluating the extent to which church voices advanced political accountability, civic virtue, and the common good in line with the demands of biblical prophetic tradition. The 2023 elections were characterised by significant electoral irregularities, voter intimidation, and disputed outcomes, creating an acute moment of moral reckoning for the Nigerian church. Using a qualitative document analysis and interview-based design, the study examines 60 election-related sermons, press statements, and pastoral letters from church leaders across all six geopolitical zones, supplemented by twenty interviews with theologians, political scientists, and civil society leaders. The analysis applies biblical prophetic criteria and political theology frameworks to evaluate the adequacy of church responses. Findings indicate a wide spectrum of responses ranging from prophetically courageous declarations that named electoral injustice and called for accountability to silent complicity, tribally motivated endorsements, and theologically vacuous calls for peace that ignored structural injustice. The study identifies fear of state reprisal, ethnic loyalty, financial dependency on political actors, and theological quietism as the primary factors silencing prophetic voices. The research recommends the development of a civic theology formation programme for church leaders in Nigeria and calls for ecumenical accountability structures that reward prophetic integrity.
