This study examines quality management systems and engineering practices in agro-processing facilities in North Central Nigeria, assessing compliance with food safety standards and identifying engineering improvement needs. Food quality and safety in agro-processing facilities are determined by a combination of engineering design factors, equipment performance, process control systems, and facility management practices. In North Central Nigeria, where cassava, yam, and soybean processing are important industries, engineering quality management in processing facilities has received limited systematic assessment. This study uses an engineering audit methodology applied to 20 medium-scale agro-processing facilities in Benue, Niger, and Nasarawa States. Engineering dimensions audited include facility layout and hygiene design, equipment condition and calibration, process control system adequacy, waste management infrastructure, and utility management. Compliance is assessed against NAFDAC processing facility standards. Corrective action requirement categorisation identifies critical, major, and minor deficiencies. Findings reveal that 75 percent of audited facilities have critical hygiene design deficiencies including inadequate separation of raw material and finished product handling areas. Process control instrumentation is absent or non-functional in 60 percent of facilities. Equipment calibration is not practised in any sampled facility. The study concludes that engineering quality management in North Central Nigerian agro-processing facilities is significantly deficient. It recommends a targeted engineering upgrade programme with NAFDAC compliance incentives and graduated compliance timelines.
