Referral Patterns Between Optometrists and Ophthalmologists in the Federal Capital Territory

Effective referral between optometrists and ophthalmologists is fundamental to a functional eye care delivery system, ensuring that patients receive appropriate levels of care for their conditions. This study examines the referral patterns, triggers, and outcomes between optometrists and ophthalmologists in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), North Central Nigeria. A cross-sectional study design will be used, combining an audit of referral letters from 20 optometry clinics over a 12-month period with a structured survey of 100 optometrists and 30 ophthalmologists practicing in the FCT. Data collected will document common referral diagnoses, communication quality, turnaround time, feedback mechanisms, and factors influencing referral decisions. Data analysis will involve descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. The study anticipates identifying fragmented communication between practitioners, including absent referral feedback loops and inconsistent referral criteria. Findings will be presented to the Nigerian Optometric Association and the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria to develop consensus-based referral protocols. This research addresses a systemic gap in interprofessional collaboration within the FCT's eye care system and contributes to the development of integrated care pathways that improve patient outcomes across the spectrum of primary to tertiary eye care in Nigeria's capital region.
