Register Variation in Nigerian Newspaper Editorial Writing: A Comparative Study of The Punch and Daily Trust

This study examines register variation in Nigerian newspaper editorial writing through a comparative analysis of editorials published in The Punch and Daily Trust between January and June 2023. Register, the variety of language used in specific social situations, reflects the institutional identity, audience assumptions, and ideological positioning of media organisations. The Punch, a South West-based national newspaper, and Daily Trust, a Kaduna-based paper with a predominantly Northern Nigerian readership, represent two of Nigeria's most widely read and editorially influential publications, making their editorial language a productive site for investigating regional and institutional variation in written Nigerian English. The study employs corpus-assisted discourse analysis, compiling a corpus of 60 editorials (30 from each newspaper) and analysing them for lexical density, sentence complexity, formality markers, hedging strategies, and the use of Nigerian English collocations. Frequency analysis of modality verbs and evaluative lexis reveals distinct ideological orientations in each paper's editorial voice. Findings show that The Punch editorials employ a higher degree of confrontational directness and second-person address, while Daily Trust editorials favour consensual framing and religious reference as appeals to shared community values. Both papers show distinctive patterns of Nigerian English lexicogrammar including specific prepositional preferences and aspect marking that diverge from British editorial norms. The study contributes to descriptive accounts of Nigerian written English registers and recommends media literacy curricula that expose students to register variation across Nigerian publications.
