Relationship Between School Environment and Academic Performance of Children with Intellectual Disabilities in Kwara State

This study investigates the relationship between school environment and academic performance among children with intellectual disabilities in special education schools in Kwara State, North Central Nigeria. The school environment, encompassing physical conditions, instructional climate, peer relationships, and teacher-student interaction quality, is a well-established determinant of educational outcomes across student populations. For children with intellectual disabilities, who require highly structured, supportive, and stimulating learning environments to achieve developmental progress, the quality of the school setting takes on particular significance. Using a descriptive correlational design, the study samples one hundred and forty children with intellectual disabilities and their teachers from government special schools in Ilorin and Offa. The School Environment Observation Scale and a teacher-completed Academic Achievement Rating Scale constitute the primary instruments. Pearson correlation and regression analysis are used to examine the strength of associations between environmental dimensions and achievement scores. The study pays particular attention to classroom organisation, availability of learning aids, noise levels, and teacher responsiveness as components of school environment. Findings are expected to indicate that structured, resource-rich classroom environments are the strongest predictors of academic achievement among this population. Recommendations include a state-funded school environment improvement programme targeting special education institutions and the establishment of minimum quality standards for special education school environments in Kwara State.
