Relevance of Library and Information Science Curriculum to Emerging Job Market Demands in Nigeria

This study assessed the relevance of the Library and Information Science curriculum to the demands of the contemporary Nigerian job market. As the information profession evolves in response to digitisation, big data, and knowledge management imperatives, questions arise about the extent to which university curricula are equipping graduates for available and emerging roles. A descriptive survey design was used, and data were collected from final-year students, recent graduates, and library employers across institutions in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt using structured questionnaires. Findings revealed a perceived misalignment between curriculum content and the technical competencies demanded by employers, particularly in areas of data management, web archiving, digital records management, and information systems. Employers reported that graduates required significant on-the-job training before becoming fully effective. The study recommended that departments undertake regular curriculum reviews in consultation with professional bodies and employers, integrate practical internship components, and strengthen training in digital information management tools.
