Rural Entrepreneurship and Poverty Alleviation in Ebonyi State: Challenges and Prospects

Rural entrepreneurship represents a promising but underdeveloped pathway to poverty alleviation in Ebonyi State, one of Nigeria's states with persistently high rural poverty indices, where agricultural-based livelihoods remain vulnerable to market failures, climate shocks, and limited value chain development. This study examines the relationship between rural entrepreneurship activities and poverty alleviation outcomes in Ebonyi State, Nigeria. The research is anchored on the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework (SLF), which evaluates poverty reduction through the lens of five capital assets: human, social, financial, physical, and natural capital. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population comprised 1,050 rural entrepreneurs and household heads across five rural communities in Ebonyi State. A sample of 291 respondents was drawn through multi-stage random sampling. Data were collected via structured questionnaires and household income-expenditure surveys, then analysed with logistic regression and descriptive statistics. Findings reveal that rural micro-enterprises engaged in agro-processing, artisanal production, and rural trade generate statistically significant improvements in household income and food security indices. The results further indicate that access to rural markets, mobile money services, and entrepreneur capacity-building programmes are the strongest predictors of successful poverty alleviation outcomes through rural entrepreneurship. It is concluded that rural entrepreneurship constitutes a viable and scalable poverty reduction strategy in Ebonyi State when enabling environment conditions are adequately addressed. The study recommends that the Ebonyi State Government increase investment in rural market infrastructure, expand mobile financial services coverage, and establish rural business development service centres in each LGA.
