School Safety Environment and Students’ Academic Concentration in Secondary Schools in Rivers State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the relationship between school safety environment and students' academic concentration in public secondary schools in Rivers State, South South Nigeria. School safety encompasses physical security, psychological safety, and freedom from harassment and bullying, all of which are prerequisites for effective learning. In Rivers State, concerns about youth restiveness, gang activity near schools, and bullying within school compounds have raised questions about the safety of the learning environment. The study adopts a descriptive survey design and samples 420 students and teachers from 40 secondary schools across Port Harcourt, Ogoni, and Ijaw local government areas. A structured questionnaire is the primary instrument, and data are analysed with mean scores, standard deviation, and regression analysis. The study draws on the Safe School Framework developed by the United States Department of Education. Findings indicate that students in schools with visible security measures, trained safety officers, and functional anti-bullying policies demonstrate higher levels of academic concentration and achieve better examination results. Students in insecure environments report anxiety, poor attendance, and difficulty concentrating in class. The study recommends the establishment of school safety committees in all Rivers State secondary schools and the incorporation of social-emotional learning into the curriculum. Keywords: school safety, academic concentration, learning environment, bullying, Rivers State.
