Serum Triglycerides and Metabolic Syndrome in Men Aged 40 to 60 in Katsina State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Metabolic syndrome is a constellation of cardiovascular risk factors with increasing documentation among middle-aged Nigerian men. This study evaluates serum triglycerides and other components of metabolic syndrome including fasting blood glucose, blood pressure, waist circumference, and HDL cholesterol in men aged 40 to 60 years in Katsina State, North West Nigeria. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted, recruiting 200 men from urban and semi-urban communities through cluster random sampling. Fasting venous blood was collected for lipid profile and blood glucose analysis by standard enzymatic methods. Metabolic syndrome was defined using the International Diabetes Federation criteria adapted for the sub-Saharan African context. Physical activity, dietary habits, alcohol use, and tobacco smoking history were documented through structured interviews. The study aims to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its individual components in this population, as well as to identify the most prevalent clustering pattern of risk factors. Logistic regression will be used to identify independent predictors of metabolic syndrome. Findings will provide region-specific data for non-communicable disease prevention planning in North West Nigeria and will contribute to epidemiological reference databases for this geopolitical zone. Keywords: metabolic syndrome, serum triglycerides, cardiovascular risk, hypertriglyceridaemia, Katsina State.
