📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Sleep is a fundamental biological need with significant implications for cognitive performance, emotional regulation, and academic achievement among adolescents. This study investigates the prevalence of sleep disorders and their effect on academic functioning among junior secondary school students in Ondo State, South West Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey will recruit 280 students aged 11 to 16 from six public secondary schools in Akure and Owo using stratified random sampling. The Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire (PSQ) will assess sleep disturbance patterns, while academic performance will be measured by the most recent mid-term examination scores. A structured questionnaire will capture sleep hours, device use at bedtime, parental supervision, and physical activity. Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression will examine the sleep-academic performance relationship. Nigerian studies have found that adolescents in urban and peri-urban settings increasingly sacrifice sleep for social media and screen use, with measurable effects on school performance. Findings will guide school health policies, parental education programs, and sleep hygiene curricula in Ondo State. Keywords: sleep disorders, academic performance, junior secondary students, Ondo State, adolescent health
