Social Consequences of Teenage Pregnancy in Rural Communities of Delta State

Teenage pregnancy in rural Nigeria generates cascading social consequences affecting educational trajectories, marriage patterns, household economic stability, and the psychological wellbeing of young mothers. This study examines the social consequences of teenage pregnancy in rural communities of Delta State, South South Nigeria. A mixed-methods design was employed, combining structured questionnaires administered to sixty teenage mothers aged 13 to 19 across Ethiope East, Oshimili South, and Isoko South local government areas with twenty in-depth interviews conducted with the teenagers, their mothers, and school officials. The Life Course Theory was applied as the theoretical framework. Results reveal that school dropout followed pregnancy in 87% of cases, with only 13% returning to formal education after delivery. Early marriage as a socially prescribed response to premarital pregnancy was arranged in 54% of cases, frequently with older men. Young mothers reported significant stigma from community members, manifesting as exclusion from peer social activities and reduced marriage prospects for those who did not immediately wed. Economic dependence on male partners or parents was universal in the sample, with no teenage mother achieving independent income within twelve months of delivery. Depression and social isolation were reported by 71% of interviewees. Religious community support was the most frequently cited positive social response. The study recommends comprehensive sexuality education in Delta State secondary schools, community-based mentorship for pregnant adolescents, school reintegration programs for teenage mothers, and targeted social protection for young mothers in rural Delta communities.
