Social Entrepreneurship and Community Development: A Study of NGO-Linked Enterprises in Anambra State

This study investigates the role of social entrepreneurship linked to non-governmental organisations in driving community development in Anambra State, South East Nigeria. Social entrepreneurship, which combines commercial enterprise activity with explicit social mission objectives, is an increasingly recognised force in Nigerian community development, with NGO-linked enterprises operating across health, education, agriculture, and environmental sectors. The study employs a qualitative case study methodology, examining three NGO-linked social enterprises operating in Awka, Nnewi, and Onitsha Local Government Areas. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with enterprise founders, managers, and community beneficiaries, supplemented by document review of business plans, impact reports, and financial records. Thematic analysis was applied to the qualitative data. Findings reveal that the most sustainable NGO-linked social enterprises are those that generate earned income from their commercial activities rather than relying entirely on donor grants, as commercial revenue provides operational resilience against funding cycle interruptions. Community trust built through the sponsoring NGO's prior reputation is identified as a critical asset that reduces the social enterprise's market entry costs. Tension between social mission objectives and financial sustainability imperatives is a common management challenge across all three cases. The study identifies a distinctive Anambra social enterprise model that leverages Igbo communal solidarity norms, the Osu-Ndu community association tradition, and diaspora remittance capital as enabling resources. Recommendations include a state-level social enterprise support fund administered through Anambra State's Community Development Office.
