Socioeconomic Factors Affecting the Nutritional Status of Elderly Persons in Enugu Urban Communities

This study investigates the socioeconomic factors affecting the nutritional status of elderly persons in urban communities of Enugu State, South East Nigeria. Population ageing is an emerging public health challenge in Nigeria, and elderly nutritional vulnerability is compounded by reduced income, social isolation, and age-related physiological changes. The study adopts a descriptive survey design, targeting persons aged 60 and above in Enugu North and Independence Layout communities. Data were collected from 200 respondents using a structured questionnaire, dietary assessment tool, and anthropometric measurements. Objectives include assessing the nutritional status of elderly respondents, identifying key socioeconomic determinants of their dietary adequacy, and determining the influence of social support on nutritional outcomes. Recent literature from urban South East Nigeria highlights food insecurity, poverty, and limited healthcare access as the primary drivers of undernutrition in the elderly population. Data were analysed using ANOVA, chi-square, and regression analysis. The Life Course Approach provides the theoretical framework, situating elderly nutrition within the cumulative context of social and economic conditions across the lifespan. Findings are expected to reveal significant socioeconomic disparities in elderly nutritional status, with social support emerging as a protective factor. Recommendations address the Enugu State Ministry of Social Development, health institutions, and community-based organisations to strengthen elderly nutrition support systems.
