Sociological Analysis of Social Enterprise Models for Community Development in Anambra State

Social enterprises represent an emerging institutional model that combines commercial viability with social development objectives, offering potential pathways for community development that are less dependent on government budgets or philanthropic charity. This study analyzes the social enterprise models operating for community development in Anambra State, South East Nigeria, examining their structures, social impact mechanisms, and sustainability characteristics. A professional case study methodology was applied to five social enterprises operating in Onitsha, Awka, and Nnewi, combining document review, semi-structured interviews with eighteen social enterprise founders and managers, and focus group discussions with forty-two community beneficiaries. The Social Enterprise Theory and Blended Value Creation framework guided analysis. Findings reveal that the most effective social enterprises in the sample operated cooperative business models that shared both ownership and profits with community beneficiaries, generating both livelihood and social cohesion outcomes. Agricultural processing and waste recycling enterprises demonstrated the most durable community impact and financial sustainability. Enterprises dependent on grant funding exhibited lower sustainability rates than those generating at least 60% of revenue from market income. Access to affordable credit for social enterprise expansion was identified as the most commonly cited structural barrier. Women-led social enterprises outperformed male-led enterprises on community trust and household-level impact metrics, though they received less institutional support. Recommendations include Anambra State development of a social enterprise support ecosystem including legal frameworks for cooperative enterprises, accessible credit facilities, and business development services tailored to social enterprise models.
