Software Quality Assurance Practices in Nigerian Commercial Banks: A Survey of Tier-1 Institutions

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

The reliability of banking software directly affects customer trust, regulatory compliance, and financial system stability in Nigeria. This study surveys software quality assurance (SQA) practices among Nigeria's tier-1 commercial banks, including Access Bank, First Bank, GTBank, Zenith Bank, and UBA, to assess the maturity and effectiveness of their quality management processes. Using a descriptive cross-sectional survey design, data was collected from 60 software quality engineers, QA leads, and IT compliance officers across bank headquarters in Lagos, South West Nigeria. The survey instrument measures alignment with ISO 25010 software quality characteristics including reliability, maintainability, security, and performance efficiency. Findings reveal that all surveyed institutions employ automated regression testing, but only 55 percent have formalised defect prevention programmes and fewer than 30 percent conduct independent SQA audits separate from development teams. The study identifies the Central Bank of Nigeria's (CBN) IT examination framework as a positive external driver of SQA investment but notes that examination frequency is insufficient to sustain continuous quality discipline. Professional recommendations include establishing dedicated SQA centres of excellence within bank IT divisions and adopting continuous testing platforms integrated with CI/CD pipelines. This research provides banking technology managers with benchmark data for SQA improvement planning aligned with CBN regulatory expectations.
