Sponsorship and Funding Strategies for Emerging Musicians in Anambra State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study investigates the sponsorship acquisition and funding strategies available to and utilised by emerging musicians in Anambra State, South East Nigeria. Breaking into the professional music industry requires substantial investment in recording, production, marketing, and touring; yet most emerging artists in Nigeria lack access to institutional funding, bank credit, or reliable patronage networks. This research explores the range of funding strategies employed by 40 emerging musicians in Awka and Onitsha, including personal savings, family support, corporate sponsorship, church patronage, crowdfunding, and government arts grants. A mixed-methods design is adopted, combining structured questionnaires with semi-structured interviews and analysis of sample sponsorship proposals and funding applications. The study benchmarks available government and private sector funding mechanisms against the actual awareness and access levels reported by emerging artists. Theoretical grounding is drawn from entrepreneurial finance, arts funding literature, and creative economy research from West Africa. Findings are expected to reveal that most emerging artists rely exclusively on personal and family resources due to poor awareness of available institutional funding and limited ability to prepare competitive funding applications. Recommendations address arts funding policy, music industry mentorship, and capacity building for grant application in South East Nigeria. Keywords: Music funding, emerging artists, sponsorship, Anambra State, arts financing.
