Strategic Planning and Competitive Advantage of Pharmaceutical Firms in Awka, Anambra State

The pharmaceutical industry in Nigeria operates in a dynamic and increasingly competitive environment where firms that invest in rigorous strategic planning consistently outperform those that rely on reactive, short-term decision-making. This study examines the relationship between strategic planning and competitive advantage among pharmaceutical firms in Awka, Anambra State. The study is anchored on Porter's Competitive Advantage Theory, which identifies cost leadership, differentiation, and focus as the three generic strategies through which firms can build sustainable competitive positions. A descriptive survey design was employed. The population comprised 89 pharmaceutical firms, including distributors, wholesalers, and retail pharmacies, operating in Awka. Given the relatively small population, a census approach was adopted, and all 89 firms were included in the study. Data were collected through structured questionnaires directed at managing directors and strategic planning officers, and analysed using regression analysis and chi-square tests. Findings indicate that mission clarity, environmental scanning, strategy implementation discipline, and performance evaluation frequency are the strategic planning dimensions most significantly associated with competitive advantage. The results further establish that firms engaging in formal annual strategic planning cycles are 2.4 times more likely to report market share growth than those relying on informal planning processes. It is concluded that systematic strategic planning is a non-negotiable driver of competitive positioning in Awka's pharmaceutical market. The study recommends that pharmaceutical business owners engage certified management consultants to facilitate structured strategic planning processes and invest in competitive intelligence gathering systems.
