Strategic Planning and Institutional Development in Technical Colleges in Ogun State

This study investigates the practice and impact of strategic planning on institutional development in technical colleges in Ogun State, South West Nigeria. Strategic planning enables institutions to align resources with long-term goals, adapt to changing labour market demands, and improve programme quality. Despite its documented benefits, many technical colleges in Nigeria operate without formal strategic plans, responding reactively to challenges rather than proactively steering development. A descriptive survey design is adopted, engaging 60 college administrators, board members, and senior staff from eight technical colleges in Abeokuta, Sagamu, and Ijebu Ode local government areas. A validated questionnaire assesses strategic planning practices including environmental scanning, goal setting, stakeholder engagement, and performance monitoring. Institutional development outcomes are assessed through programme accreditation records, enrolment trends, and graduate employment data. Descriptive statistics and correlation analysis are used. Findings are expected to reveal significant variation in strategic planning engagement across colleges, with better-planned institutions demonstrating stronger development trajectories. The study also examines the relationship between administrator training and strategic planning competence. Recommendations include mandatory strategic planning training for technical college leaders, government-supported institutional planning grants, and annual strategic performance reviews. This study contributes to educational management research in South West Nigeria and provides a practical strategic planning model tailored to the specific contexts and constraints of public technical education institutions.
