Study of Popular Theatre and Political Consciousness Among Artisans in Kano State

Popular theatre in northern Nigeria has historically engaged working-class audiences in critical reflection on political and social conditions, and examining its contemporary influence on political consciousness among artisans provides insight into theatre's civic role. This study investigated the influence of popular theatre on political consciousness among artisans in Kano Municipal and Fagge Local Government Areas, Kano State. A descriptive survey was conducted among 200 artisans who attended popular theatre performances in the preceding 12 months and 100 artisans who had not attended. A Political Consciousness Scale measuring electoral awareness, civic rights knowledge, and willingness to participate in community decision-making was administered to both groups. Theatre attendees showed significantly higher scores on civic rights knowledge and willingness to participate in community decision-making (p < 0.05). However, no significant difference was found in electoral participation intention. Theatre productions were conducted in Hausa by local groups, enhancing comprehension among the audience. Popular theatre content addressed corruption, land rights, and worker exploitation in 80 percent of reviewed productions. The study concludes that popular theatre modestly but significantly enhances political consciousness in artisan audiences. Recommendations include supporting popular theatre groups through the Kano State Arts Council, encouraging civic education content in popular theatre repertoires, and documenting the oral tradition of popular Hausa theatre as both cultural heritage and civic education evidence.
