Study of the Impact of Poor Telecommunications Infrastructure on Small Business Operations in Bauchi State

Reliable telecommunications connectivity underpins the operational efficiency, marketing reach, and financial management of small and medium-sized enterprises in developing economy contexts. This study examines the impact of poor telecommunications infrastructure on small business operations in Bauchi State, North East Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey design was employed, with structured questionnaires administered to 250 small business owners across Bauchi, Dass, and Alkaleri local government areas. The survey captured data on internet access quality, frequency of network outages experienced, business functions dependent on telecommunications, estimated revenue loss from connectivity failures, and coping strategies adopted. Simultaneously, drive test measurements of mobile broadband quality were conducted at fifty-two small business premises to obtain objective network performance baselines. Results indicate that 71% of surveyed business owners experienced mobile network outages lasting more than two hours at least three times per week. Sixty-three percent reported that poor connectivity had directly caused lost sales transactions. Estimated monthly revenue loss attributable to connectivity failures averaged 18,400 naira per business. Payment processing failures accounted for 41% of reported transaction losses. Coping strategies included maintaining multiple SIM cards from different operators and keeping cash transaction alternatives. The study recommends targeted NCC regulatory intervention to mandate coverage improvement in Bauchi's commercial zones, and advocates for business-oriented telecommunications quality benchmarks separate from residential service standards.
