Supply Chain Risk Insurance and Business Continuity in Nigerian Agribusiness Firms

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the adoption of supply chain risk insurance and its relationship with business continuity outcomes among agribusiness firms in Nigeria, with evidence drawn from firms in Kaduna, Kano, and Ogun states. Nigerian agribusiness supply chains are exposed to multi-layered risks including input supply disruption, transportation loss, processing facility damage, and distribution chain collapse, all of which can trigger severe business interruption consequences. Despite the theoretical fit between supply chain risk insurance products and agribusiness exposure profiles, empirical investigation of adoption rates and continuity benefits is absent in Nigerian academic literature. This research employs a mixed-methods design with a survey of 120 agribusiness executives and in-depth case studies of six firms that experienced supply chain disruptions over the 2020 to 2023 period. Survey data assess insurance coverage types, business continuity planning (BCP) maturity, loss experience, and recovery speed. Case studies reconstruct disruption-recovery timelines and attribute recovery outcomes to insurance, BCP, and informal coping mechanisms. Quantitative analysis employs logistic regression and survival analysis methods. Preliminary findings are expected to show that insured firms recovered significantly faster from supply chain disruptions and were less likely to experience permanent business closure. Keywords: Supply Chain Risk, Business Continuity, Agribusiness, Nigeria, Business Interruption Insurance.
