📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study surveys the availability and functional status of science laboratory equipment in senior secondary schools in Bauchi State, North East Nigeria. Laboratory-based practical learning is integral to achieving the objectives of the Nigerian secondary school science curriculum, yet widespread reports suggest that many schools in the North East geo-political zone lack basic laboratory infrastructure. A descriptive survey design was adopted, employing an observational checklist administered by trained data collectors to 15 senior secondary schools across Bauchi, Ganjuwa, and Tafawa Balewa Local Government Areas. Equipment availability was assessed across three subject areas: biology, chemistry, and physics. Findings reveal that biology laboratories have the highest availability of basic equipment, while physics laboratories are most deficient. Over half of the sampled schools lack functioning fume hoods, and chemical reagents in chemistry labs are predominantly outdated. Schools in rural areas record worse deficits than urban counterparts. These findings align with recent national surveys on science education infrastructure. The study recommends that the Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board and the State Ministry of Education allocate dedicated annual laboratory procurement budgets and that school laboratory technicians receive regular technical training.
