Survey of Knowledge of Monkeypox Prevention Among Adults in Bauchi State

The global resurgence of monkeypox has renewed attention on the preparedness of communities in endemic West African countries, including Nigeria, where knowledge gaps in prevention remain a challenge in non-urban settings. This study surveyed knowledge of monkeypox prevention among adults in Bauchi State, North East Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional design was used, with 260 adults recruited from community health centres and market areas in Bauchi, Tafawa Balewa, and Ganjuwa local government areas. A structured, interviewer-administered questionnaire was developed and pre-tested before use. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were applied in data analysis. Results indicated that only 40 percent of respondents had adequate knowledge of monkeypox, including its mode of transmission through contact with infected animals and humans, and its clinical presentation. Awareness of preventive measures including animal handling precautions and isolation of infected persons was poor among a majority of respondents. Health education from community health extension workers and radio broadcasts were the most cited sources of reliable health information. The study recommended targeted monkeypox health education campaigns in rural Bauchi communities, with special training for community health extension workers on viral disease communication.
