Survey of Microbial Contamination of Cosmetic Products Sold in Retail Outlets in Enugu, Enugu State

Cosmetic products applied to skin and mucosal surfaces must meet stringent microbiological standards to ensure consumer safety, yet products sold in Nigerian open markets often escape regulatory scrutiny. This study surveyed microbial contamination in cosmetic products including body creams, liquid foundations, eye shadows, and lip glosses purchased from 20 retail outlets in Enugu metropolis, South East Nigeria. A total of 80 product samples were analyzed using standard microbiological methods recommended by the International Cooperation on Cosmetics Regulation (ICCR). Total aerobic plate counts, yeast and mold counts, and specific testing for E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans were performed. Results showed that 55 percent of samples exceeded acceptable microbial limits. The highest contamination rates were observed in loose powder eye shadows (75%) and used-tester products (90%). P. aeruginosa, a pathogen associated with severe eye infections, was isolated from 22 percent of eye shadow samples. Factors including open-air display, consumer handling of testers, and storage in warm humid conditions were identified as primary contamination contributors. The study highlights significant consumer health risks associated with unregulated cosmetic products and urges NAFDAC to extend surveillance activities to retail cosmetic distribution networks in South East Nigeria.
