Takaful Insurance Products and Acceptance Among Muslim Communities in Kaduna State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the acceptance of Takaful insurance products among Muslim communities in Kaduna State, North West Nigeria. Takaful, which operates on principles of mutual cooperation and shared responsibility consistent with Islamic jurisprudence, offers an alternative to conventional insurance for populations with religious objections to risk pooling involving uncertainty (gharar) and interest (riba). While Nigeria hosts a substantial Muslim population, particularly in its northern states, the Takaful insurance market remains underdeveloped relative to Malaysia and the Middle East, where formal Takaful frameworks are well-established. This research employs a survey design targeting 380 adult Muslim residents in three local government areas of Kaduna State. Structured questionnaires assess awareness of Takaful products, understanding of the operational difference from conventional insurance, religious motivation for preference, and willingness to enroll. Logistic regression is applied to identify significant predictors of Takaful acceptance. Preliminary findings suggest that while religious alignment is a strong motivator, limited availability of Takaful operators and inadequate awareness constrain uptake. The study also reviews the regulatory framework for Takaful operations under NAICOM guidelines. Recommendations focus on expanding licensed Takaful operators in northern Nigeria and enhancing community-level awareness campaigns through Islamic educational institutions.
