Teacher Effectiveness and Student Engagement in Business Education Classes in Secondary Schools in Kwara State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examined the relationship between teacher effectiveness and student engagement in Business Education classes in secondary schools in Kwara State, North Central Nigeria. Teacher effectiveness encompasses pedagogical competence, subject knowledge, communication skills, and the ability to create an inclusive learning environment. Student engagement, on the other hand, reflects the degree to which students are cognitively, behaviorally, and emotionally invested in the learning process. Understanding how these constructs interact within the Business Education context is vital for improving classroom outcomes in Kwara State. A correlational survey design was adopted. The population comprised 540 SS2 Business Education students and 80 Business Education teachers in public secondary schools across the three senatorial districts of Kwara State. A sample of 270 students and 40 teachers was selected using stratified random sampling. Two validated instruments, the Teacher Effectiveness Rating Scale and the Student Engagement Inventory, were used for data collection. Pearson correlation and multiple regression analysis were employed for data analysis. Findings reveal a strong positive relationship between teacher effectiveness and student engagement, with instructional variety, feedback quality, and teacher enthusiasm identified as the most influential dimensions of effectiveness. The study recommends that the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission should embed student engagement strategies in its annual teacher capacity building programmes and use classroom observation data to support targeted professional development.
