Teacher-Student Relationship and Its Influence on Learning Outcomes of Children with Emotional Disturbance in Abia State

This study examines the influence of teacher-student relationship quality on the learning outcomes of children with emotional disturbance in special education schools in Abia State, South East Nigeria. Emotional disturbance, characterised by persistent patterns of internalising and externalising behavioural difficulties that adversely affect educational performance, is among the most demanding conditions for teachers to manage. The quality of the relational bond between teacher and student has been shown in international research to be a powerful predictor of engagement, attendance, and academic progress, particularly for emotionally vulnerable children. Using a descriptive correlational design, the study samples one hundred and ten students with emotional disturbance and their teachers from special schools in Umuahia and Aba. Teacher-student relationship quality is measured using the Student-Teacher Relationship Scale, while learning outcomes are assessed through end-of-term academic records and a teacher-rated social competence inventory. Pearson correlation and regression analysis are used to examine the strength and nature of these relationships. The study also investigates how specific teacher behaviours, including emotional attunement, consistency, and responsiveness to individual needs, contribute to positive relational quality. Findings are expected to demonstrate that warm, consistent teacher-student relationships are the strongest predictor of positive learning outcomes for this population. Recommendations include incorporating relational competency training into special education teacher professional development in Abia State.
