Teaching Arabic Language as a Gateway to Quranic Understanding in Junior Secondary Schools in Bauchi State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the effectiveness of Arabic language instruction as a gateway to Quranic understanding among students in junior secondary schools in Bauchi State, North East Nigeria. Classical Arabic proficiency is widely regarded as essential for authentic engagement with the Quran, yet the quality and effectiveness of Arabic teaching in Nigerian secondary schools remain inconsistent. The study adopts a descriptive survey design, drawing data from 240 students and 30 Arabic teachers in ten junior secondary schools across Bauchi, Tafawa Balewa, and Dass local government areas. Instruments include questionnaires, oral assessment tools, and classroom observation checklists. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation. Findings indicate a significant positive relationship between Arabic proficiency levels and students' ability to comprehend and contextualise Quranic verses. However, teacher qualification gaps, inadequate Arabic language textbooks, and an overemphasis on grammatical rules at the expense of conversational and Quranic application were identified as key constraints. The study recommends the recruitment of qualified Arabic language teachers, adoption of communicative Arabic pedagogy, and the development of context-specific Arabic instructional materials that integrate Quranic examples. These recommendations are relevant to the Bauchi State Education Resource Centre and the Islamic Education Trust. Keywords: Arabic language, Quranic understanding, junior secondary schools, Bauchi State, language pedagogy.
