Technology Adoption and Vocational Education Delivery in Polytechnics in South South Nigeria

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study assessed the adoption of emerging technologies in the delivery of vocational education programmes in polytechnics across South South Nigeria, covering Rivers, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom States. Technology adoption in vocational education, encompassing e-learning platforms, simulation software, digital fabrication tools, and computer-aided design systems, is increasingly seen as essential for producing graduates competitive in modern industries. A survey design was used, with data collected from 200 vocational lecturers and 50 technology administrators in 10 polytechnics. Instruments included the Technology Adoption in Vocational Education Scale (TAVES). Results showed that e-learning platforms were adopted in 70 percent of institutions, but simulation software and CAD tools were in use in fewer than 30 percent. Technology adoption was significantly correlated with institutional funding, internet connectivity, and lecturer digital competency. Many lecturers expressed willingness to adopt new technologies but cited inadequate training and equipment as primary barriers. The study recommends that the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) mandate minimum technology standards for accredited polytechnic vocational programmes, allocate dedicated technology integration budgets, and develop a national digital training calendar for vocational lecturers. Industry partnerships with technology companies operating in the South South should be formalized. Keywords: technology adoption, vocational education, polytechnics, South South Nigeria, digital instruction.
