Technology-Mediated Lifelong Learning and Workplace Performance Among Professionals in Lagos

This study examines the relationship between technology-mediated lifelong learning engagement and workplace performance among professionals in Lagos State, South West Nigeria. The rapid digitalisation of work environments in Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital, has created strong demand for continuous professional knowledge updating. Online learning platforms, webinars, professional podcasts, and e-learning courses have expanded access to professional development content for Lagos-based professionals. This study uses a survey design, collecting data from 320 professionals in finance, healthcare, legal, and technology sectors in Lagos who self-report active technology-mediated lifelong learning engagement. Workplace performance is assessed through self-report measures and available supervisor ratings across dimensions of job knowledge currency, innovation contribution, and professional problem-solving. Structural equation modelling is applied to examine direct and mediated pathways from technology-mediated learning to performance. Findings reveal that technology-mediated lifelong learning engagement is significantly and positively associated with workplace performance, with the effect partially mediated by perceived job knowledge currency. Self-directed learning orientation moderates the relationship, with high-SDL professionals showing stronger performance benefits from informal digital learning. Formal employer-sponsored e-learning shows stronger performance effects than purely self-directed informal learning for junior professionals. The study concludes that technology-mediated lifelong learning is a significant driver of workplace performance in Lagos's professional economy. It recommends that employers develop structured informal learning recognition and support frameworks to maximise the workplace performance benefits of employee self-directed digital learning.
