The Aesthetics of Efik Traditional Dance Drama in Contemporary Performance in Cross River State

This study examines the aesthetics of Efik traditional dance drama and its relevance to contemporary performance practice in Cross River State, South South Nigeria. Efik dance drama, characterised by elaborate costuming, rhythmic precision, and narrative movement sequences, represents a rich theatrical tradition that merges spectacle with communal expression. The research investigates how contemporary directors and performers have adapted Efik dance drama aesthetics for modern stage productions and public festivals. Using fieldwork observations, structured interviews with cultural performers, and documentary analysis, data were gathered from theatrical events and community festivals in Calabar and surrounding communities. The study finds that Efik dance drama continues to evolve as a performance form, with contemporary practitioners blending traditional aesthetic codes with modern stage lighting, amplified music, and updated costuming. The research identifies generational transmission as a critical challenge, as younger performers have limited access to formal training in traditional aesthetic conventions. The study concludes that Efik dance drama aesthetics constitute an important element of regional cultural heritage and recommends formal apprenticeship programmes under master performers to ensure continuity.
