The Architecture of Nigerian Art Spaces: Design, Function, and Cultural Meaning

The physical spaces in which art is displayed, collected, and experienced shape audiences' encounters with artworks and communicate institutional values about culture, prestige, and public access. This study analyses the architecture, design principles, and cultural meanings of art spaces in Nigeria, including purpose-built galleries, converted heritage buildings, outdoor sculpture environments, and informal art spaces in Lagos, Enugu, and Kaduna. A qualitative architectural analysis methodology is employed, combining building documentation through measured surveys and photography with in-depth interviews conducted with 12 gallery architects and designers, 15 gallery managers, and 80 visitors. The study examines spatial organisation, lighting design, circulation flow, accessibility provisions, and the semiotic relationship between architectural choices and institutional identity. The theoretical framework draws on institutional theory in architecture, museum architecture scholarship, and the environmental aesthetics literature. The study examines whether the architectures of Nigerian art spaces privilege particular audience demographics through their design choices, examining whether the formal gallery architecture model borrowed from Western institutions creates barriers to community engagement. The contrast between purpose-built and adapted spaces provides an analytical opportunity to evaluate how spatial constraints shape curatorial and audience experience. Recent scholarship on African art institutions has argued for architecturally distinctive spaces that reflect local cultural values rather than replicating international gallery aesthetics. Findings are intended for gallery designers, arts administrators, and policy advocates for cultural infrastructure investment.
