The Effectiveness of Sunday School in Nurturing Christian Children in Anglican Churches in Anambra State

This study assesses the effectiveness of Sunday school programmes in nurturing Christian values, biblical knowledge, and moral character among children in Anglican churches in Anambra State, South East Nigeria. Sunday school remains one of the oldest institutional mechanisms through which the church transmits faith to younger generations, yet its contemporary effectiveness in an increasingly digitised society deserves fresh evaluation. A descriptive survey design is adopted, with data collected from 240 parents, 80 Sunday school teachers, and 160 children aged 8 to 15 across fifteen Anglican parishes in Awka, Onitsha, and Nnewi dioceses. Instruments include age-appropriate questionnaires, observational checklists, and structured interview guides. Findings indicate that well-resourced Sunday schools with trained teachers and structured curricula produce children with stronger scriptural literacy and more consistent ethical conduct at home and in school. However, the study identifies teacher burnout, inadequate teaching materials, and competition from digital entertainment as major challenges. The research recommends that Anglican diocesan boards invest in teacher training workshops, develop context-appropriate curriculum guides, and incorporate interactive digital tools into Sunday school instruction. These recommendations are intended to revitalise Christian education for children in the 21st-century Nigerian church context.
